Talia’s animosity towards those with a special ability/power stems from many things- but namely her younger brother. While Jasper doesn’t bully her for not being a harpy, she has a deep envy for Jasper’s attitude towards life, and how he is already successful and popular at a young age. Talia disputes his happy life is due to getting to be a harpy, because it must be so wonderful to have wings and to fly— and even more so— that he can connect with and worship the harpy god.

Talia does not hear much from their god, as if he has forgotten about her. It makes Talia feel worthless at times, and has her questioning why she wasn’t good enough to be chosen to be born a harpy like the rest of her family.

With her negative outlook on life and her self-loathing deepening, Talia one day finds herself to be greeted with a demon which feeds off of that. An ancient spectral demon in the form of a man-sized centipede appears from her closet in her room.

It is called the Lithobius Heavy-Eater, and lives off of the depressions of those who missed out on being harpies— more specifically their souls. It speaks to it’s victims manipulatively, offering a place where they can be apart of something bigger (their soul being food and energy for Lithobius Heavy-Eater), and that their sad regular life isn’t worth it anymore (pressuring into suicide, as it is not strong enough to kill for itself).

Torrie entering Talia’s life helps Talia find meaning in her life again. Although she may not be “special”, she can protect Torrie and be the reason she lives.

While Torrie never tells Talia what needs to be kept so secret about her sanctai, Talia gets the sense that it must be very important—and even dangerous— that Torrie goes such lengths so conceal it. While at times Talia feels she may be getting close to Torrie, there is this feeling that perhaps she doesn’t know who Torrie is at all.

It bothers her sometimes, but puts it behind her as the feeling of getting to protect Torrie is far more rewarding.
